FAMILY BASED GREEN CARD
For you or a family member to obtain a family based Green Card, a foreign national must be
sponsored by a US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. Only certain family members are

To obtain a family based Green Card is a two-step process.
First: the Immigrant Visa petition which establishes that a qualifying relationship exists between
a US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident and the green Card applicant.
Second: The Green Card application. If the sponsor is a US Citizen and the Green card applicant
is a spouse, parent or minor child who is currently in the USA, then these 2 steps can usually be
combined into one. Otherwise, applicants must wait for the Immigrant Petition to be approved
in the first step, before they can proceed with an move onto the second part, Green Card
application.
